The most basic requirement for finding a teaching position in Thailand is a standard TEFL/TESOL certificate issued by an accredited institute. TEFL and TESOL certificates can easily be obtained in either your home country, here in Thailand, or even online. While it may still be possible to find a teaching position without proper certification, in such cases, no contract and work permit would be offered to the applicant. Please note that, to teach English in Thailand legally, you will need to obtain a regular Thai business visa and apply for a work permit. Without visa assistance provided by the employer, you wouldn't be able to apply for the necessary work permit - in which case you would be considered an illegal labourer by Thai law and at permanent risk of harsh fines and even deportation. The times of buying fake college degrees or TEFL/ TESOL certificates on Bangkok's Khao San Road are virtually over. Besides - due to the low cost of professional TEFL certification courses - why should anyone want to take that risk?
TEFL (Teach English as Foreign Language) and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificates can easily be obtained from local TEFL academies in Bangkok, Pattaya and other parts of the country. The duration of the courses should not exceed a maximum of two months, generally between 4 and 6 weeks. Depending on what package you choose, prices vary roughly from 25,000 to 50,000 Baht. At slightly higher fees many TEFL institutes and academies offer guaranteed jobs with a minimum income, which easily covers your expenses for the course, visa assistance and work permits. Online TEFL courses start at as cheap as € 295.
A final word about the pay for English teachers in Thailand! Unless you're highly qualified, or have well documented English teaching experience and find a position at a quality international school or a university, payment for teaching jobs is relatively low in Thailand and doesn't compare to the income of EFL teachers in wealthier Asian countries like Japan, Taiwan or South Korea.
To be honest, you may expect anything between 20,000 and 50,000 Baht per month - in case of part-time teaching positions (or "employment" without regular contracts) even less. On the other hand, as the cost of living in Thailand is relatively low, an average English teacher's salary might be good enough to make a living in Thailand - provided you don't maintain a tourist-like lifestyle.
