Due to the generally poor English language skills even of educated or upper class Thai people, there is a huge demand for TEFL certified native English speakers in all areas of Thailand. EFL teaching positions are available both at government and private international schools predominantly in the area of Bangkok and other larger cities (Pattaya). As the English language skills of Thai teachers, especially their conversational abilities, and subsequently the standard of English teaching at Thai schools is still extremely low - whereas the demand for professional English language training in all age-groups is continuously rising, there are immense vacancies for part or full-time TEFL certified teachers throughout Thailand.
Most EFL teaching positions require that the applicant is a native English speaker. However, in order to cover the rising demand, many local schools might accept non-native English speakers, too, as well as applicants from countries where English is an official second language (e.g. Singapore). In many cases a "Caucasian" appearance may be preferred, this means, the lighter your skin, the better are your chances to find a lucrative job.
The most basic requirement, however, is a regular TEFL/ TESOL certificate issued by an accredited institute. Such certificates can easily be obtained
in your home country, here in Thailand or even online. Whereas it may still
be possible to find a teaching position without proper certification, in such cases no contract and work permit would be offered to the applicant. Even worse - without visa assistance provided by the employer you wouldn't be able to apply for the necessary work permit - in which case you would be considered an illegal labourer by Thai law and at permanent risk of harsh fines and even deportation. The times of buying fake college degrees and TEFL/ TESOL certificates are virtually over. Besides, due to the low cost
of professional certification courses, why should anyone want to take that risk?
TEFL (Teach English as Foreign Language) and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificates can easily be obtained from TEFL institutes and academies in Bangkok, Pattaya or other parts of the country. The duration of the courses should not exceed a maximum of two months, usually between 4 and 6 weeks. Depending on what package you choose, prices vary roughly from 25,000 to 50,000 Baht. At slightly higher fees many TEFL institutes offer guaranteed jobs with a minimum income -

One final word about the pay for English teachers in Thailand! Unless you are highly qualified or have well documented teaching experience and find a position at a quality international school or university, payment for teaching jobs is relatively low in Thailand and doesn't compare to the income of EFL teachers in wealthier East Asian countries such as Japan, Taiwan or South Korea. Realistically you can expect anything between 20,000 to 50,000 THB per month, in case of part-time teaching positions (or "employment" without regular contracts) even less. On the other hand, as the cost of living all over Thailand is relatively low, an average English teacher's salary might be good enough to make a living (provided you don't maintain a tourist-like lifestyle).
