Pattaya Songkran Festival 2008 Photo Gallery Despite an official ban on high-pressure waterguns and PVC pump tubes, "Songkran" in 2008 was as wet and wild as ever in Pattaya city. Whereas the traditional Thai new year celebrations last from April 13-15 only in most parts
of Thailand, Pattaya's notorious water festival once again made an exception
to this rule and lasted from April 12th to 19th. More than a full week of water-
splashing madness on the streets of Funtown!
Despite ambitious efforts by Thai authorities to reduce the number of road accidents and nationwide "Don't drink & drive" campaigns, this year's official Songkran road death toll rose to 368 again, 7 more than in 2007. Now some Thai politicians are seriously considering an alcohol ban for future Songkran festivals as most road accidents were caused by drunk driving. Bad news indeed.
