Judging merely from the rather poor water quality at the main beaches of Pattaya and Jomtien, you could easily get a misleading impression of the hidden marine beauty that the Gulf of Siam has on offer for divers. Indeed, only a few miles offshore Thailand's tourism-spoilt coastline, the Eastern seaboard's coastal waters turn out to be a real "mekka" for scuba diving enthusiasts.
The shallow waters of the Gulf of Siam are home to a variety of maritime life forms including colourful tropical fish such as large rays or barracudas, sea turtles, spectacular coral reef and sharks of the gigantic yet harmless whale shark species and provide innumerable scenic diving sites in close proximity to Pattaya bay.
The most popular diving sites include the nearby islands of Koh Larn, Koh Sak and Koh Khrok (commonly referred to as the "Near Islands") as well as other archipelagos of small tropical islands around Koh Phai (the so-called "Far Islands"). Further down South towards Sattahip, the Koh Samae San chain of islands provides some of the best diving sites in the region both for recreational and educational diving.
Additional underwater attractions and a real incentive for more experienced divers are the several shipwrecks found on the ground of the shallow waters such as the "HTMS Khram", "Petchburi Bremen" or the "Hardeep" that have become artificial homes to coral and other forms of maritime life.
Visibility at all different dive sites ranges from 5 to 15 metres. It's at its best during the months of November through May but is more than adequate for most dives and training for the entire year. Indeed, the area of the Eastern Seaboard of Chonburi and Rayong province boasts a 365 dive day season.
With more than 30 dive sites all reachable by day trip and many shipwrecks it makes for a great training and sports diving destination. Many instructors and divemasters train here as the “never ending season” allows for non-stop training with excellent facilities, sites and wrecks.

All over Pattaya and Jomtien Beach there are a dozen and more Scuba Dive Centers that all offer a variety of courses and excursions to the most popular dive sites in the area. Furthermore, if you are not a native English speaker, an instructor who speaks the same language as you could be of great additional value.
