Judging merely from the rather poor water quality at Pattaya's main beaches, you can easily get a misleading impression of the hidden marine beauty that the Gulf of Siam has on offer for divers. Indeed, only a few miles offshore the tourism-spoilt coastline of Pattaya, the Eastern seaboard's coastal waters turn out to be a real "mekka" for scuba diving enthusiasts.
Pattaya's shallow waters are home to a variety of maritime life forms - including colourful tropical fish, large rays and barracudas, sea turtles, spectacular coral reef and sharks of the gigantic yet harmless whale shark species - and provide more than thirty scenic dive sites in close proximity to Pattaya city.
Pattaya's most popular dive sites include the nearby islands of Koh Larn (Coral Island), Koh Sak and Koh Khrok (often referred to as the 'Near Islands'), and archipelagos of small tropical islands around Koh Phai (the so-called 'Far Islands'). Further down south - off the coast of Sattahip, the Koh Samae San chain of islands provides some of the best diving sites at the Eastern seaboard both for recreational and educational diving.
Additional underwater attractions and a real incentive for more experienced divers are the several shipwrecks found on the ground of Pattaya's shallow waters, e.g. the "HTMS Khram", "Petchburi Bremen" or the "Hardeep", that have become artificial homes to coral and other forms of maritime life.
Visibility at all different dive sites ranges from 5 to 15 metres. It's at its best during the months of November through May, but is more than adequate for most dives and training for the entire year. Indeed, the Eastern seaboard regiopn, with Chonburi (Pattaya), Rayong (Koh Samet), Chantaburi and Trat (Koh Chang) provinces, boasts a 365-dive-day season.
With over thirty dive sites all reachable by daytrip, Pattaya makes for a great training and sports diving destination.
