Climate
- Pattaya: "Melting Pot of Cultures" - Naklua -
South Pattaya - Soi Buakhao - Jomtien Beach

As a result of two decades of ongoing growth and touristic development Pattaya finally gained
city status in 1978 and has its own mayor and city administration.
Pattaya municipality covers an area of more than 200 sq. km with roughly 50 sq. km of land and 150 sq. km of sea and islands including the popular tour destination Koh Larn, often advertised as Coral Island.
Pattaya City's total
population approximates officially 100,000 people with a slight majority of female citizens. These official figures are deceiving insofar, however, as they exclude thousands of resident Thai workers and Pattaya's unique bar girls, who originate mainly from Northeastern provinces and have not been accounted for in official statistics. They also exclude most resident expats and thousands of long-term visitors who stay in Pattaya most of the year. If both these groups were added to the official 100,000 residents this figure could easily double. If you'd factor the number of tourists in Pattaya who overcrowd the beaches and streets into that figure, Pattaya's actual
population might even approximate 500,000 people?

Pattaya has a coastline of altogether 15 km length including main Pattaya beach, Naklua's beaches and most parts of Jomtien Beach which partly belongs to Sattahip municipality.
The predominant
religion in Pattaya is Buddhism (80%), followed by Islam (16%; mostly Thais of Indian origin) and 2% Christians.
English language (let's rather say a kind of pigeon English which samples the most common phrases, has a simplified grammar and a pronunciation adjusted to Thai language) is spoken by most locals - shop vendors, hotel and restaurant employees. Most signboards and menus are written both in Thai and English translation, sometimes even in German or Russian Cyrillic letters. There's no need to worry either if you're not a native English speaker and your knowledge of English language is only very basic - communication with the locals might be even easier then!
If you should decide to stay a bit longer or even settle down and retire in Pattaya - why not learn some basic Thai language, even if just for fun? You would find out that picking up some basic Thai can be both easy and Fun!

Pattaya Climate, Weather And Seasons

Pattaya's
tropical climate can be subdivided into three major seasons:

You see: annual average temperatures in Pattaya don't change significantly with average highs between 30 and 33 and average lows between 20 and 27 degrees Celsius. It is the
humidity which frequently climbs up to more than 90% during rainy season that sometimes makes the "real feel" temperature higher than it actually is. Therefor "cool" in the dry and sunny winter months from November till January is just a relative term and cannot be compared to central European standards. Even in the early winter morning hours - with a fresh breeze from the sea - temperatures hardly ever sink below 20 degrees Celsius (which, however, for local standards, feels pretty cool). As humidity is very low in the winter months this is also the favourite holiday season for most western tourists and the peak of "high season" in Funtown!
Note that due to global
climate change the traditional seasons have become less predictable. In recent years, with much too little rainfall, the main water reservoirs that feed Pattaya's pipes nearly dried out several times. This has frequently caused severe water shortages around town. Consequently many hotels and condominium blocks were being forced to order additional water from (expensive) private companies in order to fill their water tanks.

November - February "cool" and dry
March - May hot and humid
June - October hot, humid and rainy
(with most rainfall in September and October and thus more moderate temperatures than in summer)

"Melting Pot Of Cultures And Nationalities"

According to figures published by the Tourism Authority Of Thailand (TAT) Pattaya welcomes
nearly 6 million visitors every year. Most foreign tourists (1.7 million, 2006) come from other Southeast Asian or East Asian countries such as China, Taiwan, South Korea or Japan. They usually stay in town for short periods only.
For decades the
British and the Germans, followed by US-Americans, other mainland Europeans and Scandinavians, had been the predominant group of Western visitors to Pattaya. Many of these former tourists have later settled down in Pattaya - either to start their own business or just enjoy retirement - and have had a significant influence on the development and shaping of local culture and lifestyle in Pattaya as we know it today.
Since the breakdown of communism and due to steady economic growth and increasing spread of wealth in countries of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, more visitors particularly from Russia visit Pattaya every year. Cyrillic letters can be spotted on an increasing number of signboards and restaurant menus around town. In opposition to single male travellers from European countries the majority of
Russian tourists travel as families and couples. They spent most of their time on the beaches or in Pattaya's shopping malls and, probably due to their lack of English language skills, preferably stay amongst fellow countrymen and don't yet mix with other "Farangs" in Pattaya's bar scene.
Due to the influx of so many different national cultures Pattaya today is
one of Thailand's most westernized and cosmopolitan cities second next only to the capitol Bangkok. In Pattaya "East meets West" in a peaceful "clash" of different cultures, cuisines, religions and lifestyles. You might not encounter the so-called "real" or "traditional" Thailand (as modern Thai culture itself is rapidly transforming and ancient Thai values increasingly mix with Western influences - which degrades the image of a "genuine Siam" to a mere tourist guide myth). Instead you will meet the truly cosmopolitan flair of Asia's most exciting beach resort.
Best evidence therefor are hundreds of international restaurants that serve literally every cuisine from all parts of the world, Pattaya's shopping malls and international supermarkets such as Foodland, Friendship, Carrefour or Best supermarket that cater to the everyday needs of Pattaya's large expat community and offer nearly anything you get in a supermarket back home. Modern Pattaya, however, goes hand in hand with traditional Thai lifestyle, typical markets and soup kitchens, Buddhist monks in orange robes, the ubiquitous melodic sound of Thai language and deliciously spicy food.
Pattaya - a melting pot of cultures "Thai-style".
Map Of Pattaya City

Pattaya's main residential areas and those of significance for tourists are embedded between the coastline of Pattaya and Jomtien Beach in the West and Sukhumvit Road in the East. Pattaya's roadmap is structured incredibly simple which makes it easy to find your way around town even as "newbie".

Three main roads ("Sai") cut through Pattaya in vertical direction:
Pattaya Beach Road
(from Dusit Resort in the North down to Walking Street and Bali Hai Pier in the South)
Pattaya Second Road/ Sai Song ("song"= two, second)
North of the Dolphin Roundabout/ crossing with Pattaya Nua, it changes to Pattaya-Naklua Road whereas its Southern extension is called Pratamnak Road and leads up to the "Big Buddha" on Pratamnak hill and further down to Jomtien Beach)
Pattaya Third Road/ Sai Saam
("saam"= three, third)

Three horizontal main roads go all the way from Beach Road in the West to Sukhumvit highway in the East:
Pattaya Nua/ North Pattaya Road
("nua"= north)
Pattaya Klang/ Central Pattaya Road
("klang"= central)
Pattaya Tai/ South Pattaya Road
("tai"= south)

These main arterial roads are linked by either numbered
side-streets/ "Soi" (Soi 6, Soi 7, Soi 8 a.s.o.) or such which have been given names of relevant buildings or hotels (e.g. Soi Yamato, Soi Post Office, Soi Diana). Some are known both by numbers and names (Jomtien Soi 5 = Soi Post Office).

Map Of Pattaya, Naklua & Jomtien Beach

Naklua & North Pattaya

Naklua, situated North of Pattaya, is still very much the old fishing village with traditional wooden houses and of less touristic significance except for its famous weekend market. There is no notable beach in Naklua, and only
a few hotels and guesthouses can be found here.
What many tourists wrongly denote as Naklua is actually just the northern part of Pattaya along
Pattaya-Naklua Road (2nd Road's northern extension north of the Dolphin Roundabout) which has more and more extended and actually merges with Naklua. North Pattaya is Funtown's "little Germany" with mostly German or Austrian restaurants, both open air and shophouse beer bars, a few Gogo Bars and various little shops and businesses along Pattaya-Naklua Road. North Pattaya has its own Wongamat Beach which
is more quiet than Pattaya's main beach and a good alternative for those who enjoy sunbathing in a more relaxed atmosphere.
(The Northern parts of the area between Pattaya Nua and Pattaya Klang, South of the Dolphin Roundabout, are generally also referred to as "North Pattaya". To mark the lines between the merging areas of Naklua, North
and Central Pattaya depends rather on interpretation than visible limits.)

South & Central Pattaya

South and Central Pattaya along
Beach Road (with its southern "Walking Street" extension), Second Road, Pattaya Klang and Pattaya Tai with their abundance of hotels and guesthouses of all standards, shopping centers, markets, restaurants, tailor shops and entertainment venues are the main centre of tourism, shopping and nightlife in Funtown.
Due to the many motorboats and the traffic noise of Beach Road in the back Pattaya's main beach might not be inviting for those who enjoy sunbathing in a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere. A walk along the promenade, however, is always a great waste of time - or just sit on a bench and watch the bustling life on Beach Road pass by and enjoy one of Pattaya's famous sunsets!

During the day and the evening hours especially South Pattaya is all about shopping. Along Pattaya Beach Road you will find literally hundreds of little shops offering souvenirs, clothes or whatever you can dream of, and unless you are in a shopping mall with fixed prices it's always possible to bargain and make a good deal.

Restaurants In Pattaya

After sunset South Pattaya and Walking Street turn into Funtown at its best - with fancy lights, music everywhere and fun-seeking night owls all over the place.
Entertainment venues include traditional-style international pubs, live music venues, open air bar complexes, "Beer Bars", A-GoGo Bars, Discos, Karaokes and whatever fastidious revellers and party animals may expect from a place that describes itself as "the extreme city"!
If you're not into "extreme" nightclubbing and prefer more laid-back evening fun, Pattaya's most popular nightlife areas might well be a bit too crowded and noisy for some tastes. Don't worry, though, there are enough quiet and peaceful spots around town that offer hassle-free entertainment where you can sip your drink and chat with friends in a decent relaxed atmosphere.

Soi Buakhao Area

Soi Buakhao
, between Second and Third Road, is a long and narrow busy "soi" which links Pattaya Klang and Pattaya Tai Road in vertical direction. Though actually just a part of South/ Central Pattaya it is worth an extra note as Pattaya's "little Britain".
Over the years Soi Buakhao (home to a popular market held every Tuesday and Friday at the Pattaya Tai Road end) has attracted a growing number of foreign businesses. Today Soi Buakhao area - along with
Soi LK Metro, Soi Diana Inn, Soi Lengkee, Soi Chayapoon and others - is packed with mainly British bars, pubs, restaurants, an extensive number of guesthouses and even a few Gogo Bars and has become a popular entertainment area especially with British tourists and residents.

Jomtien Beach

Most tourist brochures describe Jomtien Beach with its 6 km long stretch of sandy beach as a kind of Pattaya's little brother with a bit less of everything that might be "too much" in Pattaya.
In a way this description is certainly true. Even though Jomtien beach which has become popular exceedingly with family vacationers and domestic Thai tourists from Bangkok doesn't actually resemble what vistors might expect from a tropical beach, Jomtien offers a much
more relaxed environment for swimming, sunbathing and enjoying various beach activities than Pattaya's crowded main beach. The atmosphere is less touristy and the nightlife more relaxed and laid-back. But somehow this approach cannot cover all aspects of life and holidays at Jomtien.
Whereas only a few decades ago Jomtien Beach could only be reached by
a boat-trip around Pratamnak hill - which seperates it from South Pattaya -, Jomtien Beach today has become not only a
tourist destination in its own right but also one of Pattaya's most favourite residential areas. (...)
