WHAT'S NEW in the PATTAYA POOL LEAGUE 2009-10 SEASON?
At the General Meeting at O'Learys Sports Bar on November 16, no changes to the Playing and Procedural Rules could be agrred on. Same same but different ...
- Most importantly, on a show of hands, a majority was in favour of the match format remaining at 15 singles games (played in three sets of five singles games each, i.e. 5+5+5.) As previously, a maximum of two Thai players are allowed two play in each set of five. Three players in each set must be expats or visiting foreigners.
- On a show of hands, a majority was in favour of the home venue continuing to provide supper.
- Free Drop Bar (Pratamnak Road Soi 4) have offered 10,000 Baht to sponsor the League, so this season the League will be known as the Free Drop Pattaya 8-Ball Pool League.
- Administration: Dennis will continue as Secretary. Andy (San Snack Bar) will collect the results and Derrick (Free Drop) will be the first contact for any disputes.
What needs to be added: If there should be any disputes between teams on a match night, both team capains should be reasonable enough to find an acceptable solution.
- The perennial discussion about some teams being 'poor spenders' took place. There are always some who look at a pool match as "revenue" while others look at it as a night out. Well, it should be a combination of both in the best case.
There's nothing practical the League can do to require a minimum level of spending. However, the visiting team should have the common sense to spend enough to cover the cost of supper, as an absolute minimum.
PATTAYA 8-BALL POOL LEAGUE
The Pattaya 8-ball pool league, a friendly amateur pool league for venues all over Pattaya, kicked off back in the year 2000 and has now entered its 22nd season. This longevity makes the original Pattaya 8-ball pool league the longest-running 8-ball pool league among half a dozen of others in Pattaya.
The League is subdivided into three divisions with currently nearly 30 teams. Matches take place weekly on Monday; the official match start time is 8.30pm.
This season, the match format is 15 straight singles games (played in three sets of five games). Participating teams must have a minimum of five and may have a maximum of 15 players.
The basic requirement for joining the League is an "acceptable" venue with a standard 7, 8 or 9-ft pool or snooker table with a reasonable, well-maintained surface and an adequate playing space around the table.
League matches will be played according to the (old) English Pool Association (EPA) rules - with minor amendments for local preferences.
Venues from all around Pattaya and Jomtien are invited to join the league in future seasons, or to replace a team that withdraws from the league in mid-season.
