Since the late 1990s, long after Pattaya had already become one of South-East Asia's top beach resorts, Jomtien with its 6-km-long stretch of sandy beach has gained more and more popularity not only with family vacationers and weekend tourists from Bangkok, but also with "traditional" Pattaya visitors seeking a more tranquil alternative to South Pattaya's traffic and noise.
Jomtien's ultimate bonus is that it provides all the features of a relaxed beach holiday in a quieter and less "touristy" environment, however, within immediate vicinity of South Pattaya and Walking Street, which can be reached by Baht-bus in less than 15 minutes.
Jomtien Beach, with an abundance of hotels, seaside resorts and inexpensive guesthouses, has therefore become the perfect holiday destination for tourists who don't fancy a vacation right in the bustling centre of Pattaya's entertainment zones, but still don't want to miss out on Pattaya's vibrant nightlife and immense shopping facilities, just a few kilometres north of Jomtien.
Pratamnak ("Big Buddha") hill which topographically seperates Jomtien bay from South Pattaya, has itself become one of Pattaya's most booming residential areas - to the extent that Jomtien's northern areas actually merge with the southernmost parts of Pattaya.

Most tourist brochures describe Jomtien Beach as some kind of Pattaya's little brother, with a bit less of everything that might be "too much" in Pattaya: less nightlife and "girlie bars," less traffic, less noise etc. And in a way, this description is true.
It was not until the mid-1980s that the first hotels and resorts were built along Jomtien beach, while back in the 1970s only, Jomtien could basically only be reached by a boat-trip around Pratamnak Hill. It is also true that the atmosphere at Jomtien is less "touristy" and the nightlife much more relaxed and laid-back. But somehow this approach cannot quite do justice to all that Jomtien has on offer, not only for tourists but expats alike.
Jomtien in the 21st century has become not only a tourist destination in its own right, including a fair share of nightspots and quite a remarkable bar scene of its own, but also one of Pattaya's most favourite residential areas, with new condominium projects and residential "villages" under construction all the time.
However, Jomtien's major attraction has always been its 6km-long sandy beach. Despite excess supply of noise-polluting jet skis and motorboats, a disproportional number of beach vendors, and the fact that the water quality does not quite resemble what visitors might expect from a "tropical beach" either, Jomtien provides a much more relaxed environment for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying all the various water activities, than Pattaya's crowded main beach. Provided you avoid weekends and Thai public holidays, when loads of Bangkokians overcrowd Jomtien's waterfront, you'll find a beach much more suitable for relaxed sunbathing and swimming than Pattaya's noisy main beach.
Beach and water activities include banana boat and jet-ski rides, windsurfing, parasailing, water skiing, scuba diving and snorkelling - whatever you can think of. And in case you get tired of just hanging about on your deckchair, why not take a ferry or speedboat to Pattaya's own "Coral Island" (aka Koh Larn) which has truly crystal-clear water and white sandy beaches?

Find Your Way Around Jomtien Beach

Jomtien Beach is situated in its own bay, just a few kilometres south of Pattaya. On average, it's just a 10-minutes Baht-bus ride to South Pattaya, Walking Street etc.
To find your way around Jomtien is extremely easy. At the moment, there's only one main North- South connection: Jomtien Beach Road, including several side-streets (soi in Thai language) some of which are cul-de-sacs. Jomtien Beach Road has only two main connections with Sukhumvit Road: Soi Wat Boon and Soi Chaiyapruek. While the construction of Jomtien 2nd Road - linking Thappraya Road (junction at the Hanuman Statue) with the southernmost parts of Jomtien - has basically been finished in 2013, it's still of little significance only for most tourists.
The soi's (side-streets) at Jomtien are either numbered (e.g. Soi 5, 7), or have been given names of relevant buildings or hotels (e.g. Soi Whitehouse or Soi Welcome Jomtien). Others are known both by numbers and names (Jomtien Soi 5 = Soi Post Office). While some connect Jomtien Beach Road with Jomtien Second Road or Sukhumvit highway, others are just cul-de-sacs.
Baht-Bus taxis drive up and down Jomtien Beach Road and connect Jomtien with South Pattaya. When you take a Baht-bus from anywhere along Jomtien Beach Road and and travel northwards, you can be sure that about 10 minutes later, you will end up across the hill in Pattaya. And as elsewhere in Thailand, motorcycle taxis can be found at virtually every street corner.
When branching off the beachfront at the Dongtan Police Box in Jomtien's North, Jomtien Beach Road changes its name to Thappraya Road (main taxi route to Pattaya!) that goes all the way to South Pattaya and merges into Pattaya 2nd Road. Just one kilometre up Pratamnak Hill, there's a junction with Thepprasit Road, which is the main link between Jomtien and Sukhumvit Road.
Jomtien's own gay beach area ("Dongtan Beach") is situated north of the Dongtan Police Station at the junction of Jomtien Beach and Thrappraya Road. Map of Jomtien Beach

What To Do At Jomtien Beach?

While in the early days of touristic development (1980s and 90s), holidays at Jomtien Beach had been focused mainly on beach activities, Jomtien in the 21st century has not only become a tourist destination in its own right and one of Pattaya's most popular residential areas, but has also developed its own infrastructure - including expat-oriented supermarkets, international restaurants serving delicacies from all across the world, and entertainment zones with dozens of beer bars and pubs, and even a poular GoGo bar.
Along Jomtien Beach Road and its numerous sidestreets (soi) you'll find an ever growing number of Thai, seafood and international restaurants, money exchange booths, travel agencies, souvenir shops and "minimarts," traditional massage parlours and real estate agents, as well as a number of pharmacies, dental clinics and opticians.
Though shopping facilities at Jomtien Beach, with most shops being rather small and specialized in "souvenirs" or beach clothing, simply can't compare to the shopping paradises of Pattaya or Bangkok, Jomtien still satisfies most of your tourist shopping expectations.
For example, the popular Thepprasit Nightmarket (Thepprasit Road, Sukhumvit Road end; held every weekend from Friday to Sunday) is well worth a visit and is known as one of Pattaya's largest and most interesting markets - not only for tourists but locals alike. Just around the corner on Sukhumvit Road, a large Tesco Lotus branch and an "Outlet Mall" - which features brand-name clothing at discount prices - are awaiting you.
Near the junction of Thappraya and Thepprasit Road, you'll find a large international supermarket ("Foodmart") that caters for the culinary everyday needs of tourist and expats alike. And if all that should still not be enough to satisfy your shopping needs, then Pattaya city is just a 10-minutes taxi ride away (which should not cost you more than 20 Baht). Shopping In Pattaya
Beach and water activities include banana boat and jet-ski riding, windsurfing, parasailing, scuba diving and snorkelling, or whatever you can think of. Other popular attractions and daytime pastimes include Bungy jumping, a visit to the Pattaya Water Park and Tower, Underwater World on Sukhumvit Road, the popular Jomtien Fishing Park, or a day trip to Koh Larn.

Jomtien Nightlife Areas & Bars

While only a decade ago, holidays at Jomtien were mostly about beach and water activities, with only little entertainment options for revelers too lazy for a Baht-bus ride to Pattaya, Jomtien has established quite a remarkable bar scene of its own in recent years, with an ever-growing number of family-friendly bars and pubs, traditional "girlie" bars catering to single male tourists - and even its own little GoGo bar. Roughly estimated, Jomtien has more than 100 beer bars now, and this number is growing continuously.
If you find South Pattaya or Walking Street too noisy, crowded and "touristy," but still don't want to miss out on all the varieties of nightlife which Pattaya has become notorious for, then Jomtien is probably the perfect choice for your holiday destination.
Jomtien's most prominent entertainment areas include "Jomtien Complex", Thappraya Road, Soi Whitehouse, Soi 5 and Soi 7, where dozens of bars can be found. Soi Welcome is currently the southernmost Soi with a noteworthy nightlife and a dozen beer bars, international restaurants and guesthouses. Jomtien's only GoGo bar (called "We Are No.1 AGoGo") is located near the Dongtan police box on Thappraya Road, opposite Country Road III bar, and is known for long opening hours.
Since 2010, the new open-air bar complex near the Rompho market (Jomtien 2nd Road, opposite Soi 5 and 7) has emerged as Jomtien's most popular entertainment area - notable especially for cheap beer prices and regular pool competitions, and exceedingly popular with expats. In 2013, the number of beer bars in the so-called Rompho bar complex has already grown to more than 50, and construction of the complex still continues!
Drinking prices, lady drinks, bar fines etc. are roughly the same as in Pattaya. Expect to pay bar fines of around 300 Baht, plus usually 1,000 Baht for the girl (long-time). While the official closing time seems to be around 1am, most bars close between 2am and 3am in the morning. And after all bars have closed, you can always find some beach hookers, and usually loads of ladyboys, along Jomtien Beach Road, mostly in the areas in front of Soi 5, Soi 7 and Soi Whitehouse.
Though most bars are "girlie" bars that cater to straight revelers, quite a few gay bars and clubs, catering to tourists with an "alternative" lifestyle, can be found in the Jomtien Complex area.
