Health Care in Pattaya as well as in Bangkok or other popular Thai tourist destinations is generally excellent and inexpensive. Unsurprisingly large numbers of tourists undergo medical procedures in Thailand as part of their journey to Thailand (see links below).
There are four hospitals within Pattaya city limits. Whereas they all provide modern facilities and good health care, prices for their services vary widely. Whereas the state-run Banglamung Hospital in Naklua is the cheapest of them, it might be most convenient for tourists and expats alike to use the services of Pattaya's private hospitals. Both Pattaya International Hospital and Bangkok Pattaya Hospital are specialized in providing excellent health care services to foreigners with upscale medical facilities, packaged health care options and no language barriers between patients, doctors and nurses; Bangkok Pattaya Hospital, however, offers the lower prices.
Private health care clinics and doctor's offices can be found abundantly all over Pattaya city. Whereas their prices are generally cheap, their service standards vary widely and the licensing regulations seem to be rather lax. Especially for foreign visitors without any knowledge of Thai language, it might make sense to consult a general practitioner who is able to speak another language than Thai.
Dental care in Pattaya is generally excellent and extremely cheap. There's an abundance of dental clinics to choose from all over Pattaya and Jomtien. Prices for tooth extraction start at around 300 THB, complete cleaning can be as cheap as 600 but should not be more than 1000 THB, and laser tooth whitening, crowns or dental implants, depending on the material used, cost only a fraction of what you would have to pay back home.
For minor medical problems you should not even have to use the services of a health clinic or doctor. There are hundreds of pharmacies all over Pattaya which all provide excellent service. Most medication is prescription-free, so just explain to the pharmacist what your problem is or what medication you need, and he should provide you with the proper drugs. Although many of the drugs and medications available in your home country may not be available in Thailand, there are equivalent drugs available at a fraction of prices you would have to pay back home.
A Boots Pharmacy branch can be found on the 1st floor of Royal Garden Plaza shopping mall between Pattaya Beach Road and Second Road.
Opticians, often incorporated into larger chains of optical centers (Beautiful Optical, Euro Optic, Top Charoen Optical), can be found abundantly all over Pattaya. Most of them offer free eye tests and provide quality workmanship at reasonable prices. Cheap reading glasses are available at small market stalls, too!
When abroad, the last thing you might want to worry about is paying for your medical expenses and associated costs. Therefore it is recommended that prior to your trip (or moving to Thailand), you sign up for an adequate medical or travel insurance and check with the insurance provider that you'll be able to claim reimbursement abroad.
