If you're looking for clear-cut sexual services and female companionship for just an hour or so, or for some reasons (say, you're married or in a relationship?) it should not be convenient for you to take a bar lady back to your room, then so-called short-time bars offer a cheap and convenient alternative to you.
As the name says, short-time bars provide short-time sexual services, usually for up to one hour. Typical short-time bars are indoor bars with dark glass fronts, often tell-tale names, and always a handful of girls in sexy dresses hanging about outside, trying to drag customers in.
While the "regular" bar business takes place on the ground floor - including many girls to choose from - the upper floors provide basic guest rooms (shower and toilet often not in the rooms) where you can enjoy yourself discretely in the company of the girl of your choice. (While some of these bars are more bar fine-oriented than "regular" beer bars, in most cases customers who just want to have a drink, or "play" with the usually very approachable girls without intention of paying a bar fine, are still welcome.)
In that respect, short-time bars can be compared with intimate small brothels, and ladies working here also seem to be less shy and more "tame to the hand" than girls in "regular" beer bars. Pattaya's most extensive choice of short-time bars - with around 50 small bars concentrated in a narrow side-street, and extremely approachable girls hanging about outside their venues - can be found on Soi 6 (Soi Yodsak) between Pattaya Beach Road and Second Road in North Pattaya - probably Pattaya's most notorious area for die-hard "sex tourists" and expat "butterflies" looking for a "quickie" in the afternoon.
Soi 6 has around 50 bars - mostly indoor short-time bars with telltale names such as Butterfly, Love Club, Route 69 and The Eager Beaver - which all get going at around 13.00h and close at 1.00h. Most Soi 6 bars cater to 100%-straight customers; however, some places also employ ladyboys or katoeys. While some of these bars feature a (for newbies often opaque) mix of "real" girls and "women of the second category" (many equipped with massive silicon parts!) some venues are 100% dedicated to ladyboys, so watch out!
A couple of short-time bars and BJ bars with tell-tale names such as Pump Station, where the girls provide you with oral satisfaction in separate bar rooms on the upper floors, can be found on Soi Post Office, or Soi 13/2, in South Pattaya (although more adventurous and daring Soi 6 girls are usually also ready to "help" you in the dimly-lit sofa corners of their bars.)

Especially Soi 6, 7 and 8, as well as Pattaya's world-famous Walking Street, the unrivalled epicentre of Pattaya's nightlife, are literally packed with hundreds of neon-lit bars - popular hangouts with insomniac tourists and foreign residents of Pattaya alike.
Despite numerous plans in the past to restrict the number of bars in Pattaya, shut down venues providing "lewd entertainment," and ban bars to designated entertainment zones, there are new bars and entertainment venues opening up all the time. So no matter where you stay in Pattaya, you'll hardly be able to walk further than a hundred meters without bumping into yet another beer bar decorated with fancy lights and bar girls shouting Hello sexy man! - trying to drag you in.
The official closing hour in designated entertainment zones is around 1.00h - with Pattaya's main entertainment zone stretching from Pattaya Beach Road to 3rd Road in the East, and from North Pattaya Road to the southern end of Walking Street. In practice, however, "around 1.00h" usually translates to sometime between 1 and 3am depending on the location (3am on Walking Street).
Outside "designated zones" (Jomtien, East Pattaya) the official closing time also seems to be 1.00h. However, depending on how strictly these rules are enforced, "closing" is often interpreted as switching off the music and non-essential lighting only while most bars usually stay open until 2.00h in the morning (or later). Pattaya Beer Bars: More than just Beer, Whisky and Music ...
The most traditional and Pattaya-typical form of a bar beer (as Thai people call them) is an open- air kind of a hut, with a square bar counter and roof on top. Whereas the punters sit on bar stools around the bar, the bar girls, mostly prostitutes who are "for hire," stand or sit behind the counter and entertain their customers from there. Apart from having a drink or chatting with the girls, beer bar pastimes include a game of pool, connect-four and shut-the-box.
Many of these open-air bars are concentrated in large beer bar complexes, most densely on Soi 7 and Soi 8. Other bars are located on the ground floors of shophouse units, which often provide guest rooms on the upper floors (indoor bars). So-called short-time bars, usually with dark glass fronts and dozens of girls sitting outside advertising their services, can be found abundantly on Soi 6 between Pattaya Beach and Second Road. In addition to the regular bar business, their services rather resemble those of "small brothels" so-to-say, including rooms with "maid service" available upstairs.
In order to draw attention to themselves and their services, Pattaya bar girls shout at passers-by Hello sexy man! Where you go? I go with you! or something even more obvious. If you travel as a couple or family, these rather silly, and sometimes annoying, verbal invitations should be more reserved, however: Hello madame, welcome inside please! etc.
What needs to be pointed out here: Although Pattaya bar girls are prostitutes effectively, bars in Pattaya (including GoGo bars) cater not only to single male tourists, but female guests, couples and families are welcome nonetheless.
Especially during the long low season, roughly from late April through October, there are usually more "service" girls than punters in the bars - on average, depending on the size and the location of the venue, roughly between 10 and 20 ladies per bar. (Now if you multiply this vague figure by the estimated total number of beer bars all over Pattaya, and add the thousands of GoGo girls and freelance hookers on top, you'll get a very basic idea of how many "available" girls there are in Pattaya . According to my own calculations, their number may well exceed 20,000!)
Drinking prices in beer bars are reasonably cheap overall and less expensive than in GoGo bars). Small bottles (0,33l) of locally-brewed (Singha, Chang) or imported beers (Heineken, San Miguel, Tiger etc.) are sold at around 50 to 90 Baht (on average around 70 Baht a bottle). Imported spirits shouldn't be more than 120 Baht per glass in most bars. Drinks bought for employees, so-called "lady drinks", are slightly more expensive than regular drinks, but usually don't exceed 120 Baht or so; the actual price is often posted on the wall or in the drinks menu.
Pattaya bar girls, except for the cashier and the so-called mamasan - a kind of female manager and "pimp" in one person who manages the various activities of the girls - are actually hostesses or, in more obvious words, prostitutes who are ready to accompany their male customers for an hour or two, or the rest of the night back to their rooms. To take a girl out of "her" bar, customers usually have to pay a so-called bar fine (money paid to the bar directly so that the lady can leave with the customer) of usually around 300 Baht. The bar fine, valid for usually the rest of the night, will be added to your bill and is generally not refundable.
Pattaya bar girls earn moderate commissions both on bar fines and "lady drinks", giving them an opportunity to increase their generally low base wages, which are roughly between 2,000 and 4,000 Baht a month. However, the payment of a bar fine (pay bar?) entitles you only to take the lady out of the bar; you will still have to pay her a kind of compensation fee for additional sexual services or just for spending her time with you, even if you shouldn't have sex with her. For extra sexual services, you will be expected to pay around 1,000 Baht, or roughly between 500 and 1,500 Baht - depending on whether it's "short time" (an hour or two) or "long time" (all night), high or low season, as well as the individual expectations of your lady.

If you should either not be looking for female company, or travel as a couple or family, a night out in a Pattaya beer bar can still be lots of fun. Although the staff of a typical beer bar will usually all be prostitutes, customers without intention of paying a "bar fine" are generally very welcome, too, and indeed make up the majority of the clientele. You can always pop in for a couple of drinks, a game of pool, and to chat with other punters, just as you would in your local pub back home.
Drink prices are very reasonable, i.e. cheap when compared to what a beer may cost in a pub in your home country. The girls are always happy to entertain their guests with a game or have a chat with you; alternatively you can just listen to the music and enjoy Pattaya's unique nightlife atmosphere. The only real - yet significant - difference is that the bar maids, if a financial agreement has been settled, are available for extra "out-of-the-office" services in your room ...

For extra sexual services, you will be expected to pay around 1,000 Baht, or roughly between 500 and 1,500 Baht - depending on whether it's "short time" (an hour or two) or "long time" (all night), high or low season, as well as the individual expectations of your lady.

If you should either not be looking for female company, or travel as a couple or family, a night out in a Pattaya beer bar can still be lots of fun. Although the staff of a typical beer bar will usually all be prostitutes, customers without intention of paying a "bar fine" are generally very welcome, too, and indeed make up the majority of the clientele. You can always pop in for a couple of drinks, a game of pool, and to chat with other punters, just as you would in your local pub back home.
Drink prices are very reasonable, i.e. cheap when compared to what a beer may cost in a pub in your home country. The girls are always happy to entertain their guests with a game or have a chat with you; alternatively you can just listen to the music and enjoy Pattaya's unique nightlife atmosphere. The only real - yet significant - difference is that the bar maids, if a financial agreement has been settled, are available for extra "out-of-the-office" services in your room ...
