Difficult to guess and impossible to count how many "beer bars" there are in Pattaya but it must be well over 1000. So if you're looking for a nearby place to have a drink or find attractive female companionship for a couple of hours or the rest of the night you will never have to search for very long.
Even though beer bars are concentrated most densely in South Pattaya, bars can be found from Naklua in the North down to Jomtien Beach in the South. Especially Soi 6, 7 or 8 and, of course, Walking Street have become popular both with tourists and foreign residents. Despite numerous plans in the past to restrict the number of bars in Pattaya, shut down venues providing "lewd entertainment" and to ban entertainment spots to designated "zones", there are new bars and entertainment complexes opening up all the time. Indeed, wherever you stay in Pattaya, you can hardly walk further than 100 meters without bumping into yet another beer bar decorated with fancy lights and girls yelling "Hello sexy man!" and trying to drag you in!

The most traditional and Pattaya-typical style of a bar beer (as the Thais call them) is an open-air kind of a hut with a square bar counter and a roof on top. Whereas the punters sit on barstools around the bar the "service girls" stand or sit behind the counter and entertain their clients from there. Many of these open-air bars are concentrated in large beer bar complexes; other beer bars are simply located in the ground floors of shop-houses that often operate as guesthouses on the upper floors. So-called "Short Time Bars", exceedingly found along infamous Soi 6/ SoiYodsak, are a special variety of shophouse bars that can most likely be compared to small brothels and provide room rental service for "special" purposes (read below).
In order to draw attention to themselves, many bar girls yell at passengers "Hello sexy man! Where you go?" or something even more obvious. In case you're a woman yourself or travel as a couple or family their verbal invitations should be more reserved and decent. Especially during low season there are usually more "service" girls than punters in the bars - on average, depending on size and location of the bar, roughly between ten and twenty. (Now if you multiply this vague figure by the total number of bars in Pattaya and add all the A-GoGo girls and hundreds of freelance hookers on top, you get a very basic idea of how many "available" girls there are in Funtown.)
Drinking prices in average beer bars are reasonably cheap overall and less expensive than in GoGo bars. Small bottles (0,33l) of local (Singha, Chang) or imported beer (Heineken, Tiger, San Miguel) are sold at roughly 40 to 80 Baht. Imported spirits should not be more than 100 Baht per glass in most bars. The atmosphere is overall friendly and hassle-free, no matter who or what your intentions are (apart from drinking).

Pattaya bar girls (except for the cashier and the Mamasan who is a kind of manager and "pimp" in one person that manages the various activities of the girls) are actually "hostesses" or, in more obvious words, prostitutes that are willing to accompany their male customers provided these pay the so-called "bar fine" of between 200 and 300 THB in order to take a girl out of her bar for the rest of the night.
Girls earn commissions both on bar fines and "lady drinks" which give them a possibility to increase their generally low base wages. However, the payment of the "bar fine" entitles you only to take a girl out of her bar for the rest of the night - you still have to pay her a "compensation fee" for any "extra" services, though - roughly between 500 and 1000 Baht depending on whether "short" or "long time", high or low season and the expectations of your lady. In order to avoid a bad surprise or even an argument the following morning it's advisable to agree on a price before.
Please note that bar fines in Gogo bars and the individual "compensation fees" for sexual services provided by GoGo dancers are higher than in outdoor bars.

If you should either not be looking for company or travel as a couple/ family,
then a night out at a beer bar can still be a lot of fun. Pattaya beer bars can just operate as "regular" bars, too, and generally everybody's welcome! You can just pop in for a drink as you would in your regular pub back home, the only difference is that the female service staff - if required - is available for "extra" services.
Drink prices are in general very reasonable, that is, cheap when compared
to what you would have to pay in a pub in your home country. The girls are always happy to entertain their guests with a game or have a chat with you, alternatively you can just listen to the music, play a game of pool or enjoy Pattaya's unique nightlife atmosphere!

Short-Time Bars

If you are looking for female companionship for a limited amount of time and clear-cut sexual services or it should not be convenient for you to take a girl back to your hotel room for some reason, so-called "Short-time bars" might offer a cheap and convenient alternative to you. As their name says, Short-
time bars provide short-time sexual services, usually for up to an hour. Most "S-T" bars are located in shophouses. Whereas the "ordinary" bar business
is being operated on the ground floors (including many girls to choose from), the upper floors provide guestrooms where you can enjoy yourself discretely in the company of the girl of your choice. In that respect short-time bars can be compared to intimate small brothels. S-T bar fines are around 300 Baht and typically include the room rental fee for up to an hour. Most girls will be satisfied with an additional 500 to 700 THB in return for sexual services. The most extensive choice of Short-time bars (with extremely approachable girls waiting outside their premises and trying to drag you in) can be found along Soi Yodsak/ Soi 6 between Pattaya Beach and Second Road. A few BJ bars with telltale names such as "Pump Station", where the girls give you a blow job in separate bar rooms on one of the top floors, can be found on Soi Post Office, South Pattaya. Some Soi 6 bar girls, however, are willing to provide oral satisfaction right in the dimly-lit sofa corners of the main bar, too :)
