The Truth About Pattaya Bar Girls & Thai-Farang Relationships

Pattaya has been trying to upgrade its good old sleazy image ambitiously in recent years, away from its infamous "sex image" and tattered reputation as a receptacle for "sex tourists" towards upmarket "quality" tourism. But have these efforts been really successful? Or have the TAT (Tourism Authority of Thailand) officials just been naive and presumptuous with their ambitious yet ivory-tower advertising strategies for a new "clean" Pattaya?
Honestly, it looks a bit like the latter.
No doubt, in the year 2008 Pattaya's sexy bar girls are still one of the main attractions that Funtown has on offer for single male tourists. The grown-up former "tiger" Thailand might no longer be a third world country, prices (not only for sexual services) have increased significantly recently whereas the "quality" of the working girls might have somewhat declined compared to the good old early days - yet Pattaya is still one of the few places in the world where a man can materialise his secret dreams of sexy girls at affordable prices or, to quote an old friend of mine, "Disneyland for adults".

Looking back at my first ever visit to Thailand in the summer of 1997 makes me smile amusedly nowadays. A cousin of mine who knew the "traps" of Pattaya well enough from several previous visits had warned me urgently not to fall in love with one of the bar girls immediately but to sample as much of Pattaya's sleazy fun as possible during my 3-weeks stay. I still remember laughing at him: "Don't worry." Of course I was neither a "sex tourist" nor an "old pervert" who had to pay for sex with young women, I was just in my mid-20s, fairly educated and not a "love fool"!? Oh my Buddha! I wasn't prepared for what expected me!
Of course, it took me just a couple of days (and nights of course) until I had literally fallen in love (not only) with Pattaya, last but not least thanks to the beautiful smiles of these thousands of charming (and available!) Thai ladies and the great fun time they gave me! I immediately felt like having found my second home or, let's rather say, the real home of my heart - a place I had unconsciously been looking for all my life.
Back home I had been only an average looking guy that most girls wouldn't take notice of - in Pattaya I was an object of unanticipated female desire! In fact, Pattaya was Disneyland for adults, and I felt like hapless Donald Duck in the arms (and between the thighs) of 1000 sexy Daisy's! Even given the nature of the ambiguous "bar girl" profession which, after all, is just a subtle form of prostitution (read below!) it was still the perfect realisation of a man's secret paradise. To be fair with Pattaya - it were not only the Thai girls (and their sexual availability at affordable prices) that instantly made me addicted to Funtown. Then again, what would would Pattaya be without these tens of 1000s of sexy girls?? Sure enough - I wouldn't be here now!
So who are these Pattaya bar girls at all???

Bar Girl Basics: "No Money, No Honey"

First of all, the vast majority of girls in Pattaya's bars and GoGo clubs does not actually come from Pattaya but originate from Thailand's Northeastern region usually referred to as "Isaan". Traditionally "Isaan" has always been Siam's poorest region - rich in cultural heritage but an only little developed and hardly industrialized rural region between the borderlines of Laos in the North and East and Cambodia in the South.
Therefor it shouldn't come as a surprise to you that the average Thai bar girl is a rice farmer's daughter from remote village areas who has enjoyed only very little education (maximum of six years school visit) and, in spite of her Western appearance, is actually very traditional and pays high respect to family values. The average bar girl, no matter how old (and they're usually older than they look!) looks back onto an unhappy history of at least one broken marriage or love affair with a local man, almost all girls have given birth to children who are entrusted in their grandparents' care. Given their poor educational background and, as a result of this, the lack of lucrative employment opportunities in their home provinces, you may have a guess what these girls have come to Pattaya for and started doing the bar job and "sell pussy"?!
Look for a foreign boyfriend or husband? Whereas this might be a beneficial side-effect, first of all the correct answer is "money". "No money, no honey", as bar girls say. In other words, they are trying to make a living off their most valuable resource: their body.
When a village girl has finally made the decision to seek an employment as "sex worker" in Pattaya, she has basically two choices: a) look for a job in a regular beer bar (low base wages, long shifts) or b) work as pole dancer in a GoGo bar - provided she is not too shy to exhibit her body in front of a male audience and is "easy" enough "on the eye". Other girls soon soon get tired of regular working hours or the bossy behaviour of a bar owner or "mamasan"
and decide to work as freelancers. Freelance hookers can usually be picked up along Pattaya beach road promenade or in one of the notorious Walking Street discotheques that operate as "pick-up joints" for freelance girls (e.g. Marine Disco, Lucifer's or Tony's). Note: When picking up freelancers and taking them back to your hotel room, you save a couple of 100 Baht notes
on bar fines. In case of problems, however (such as a loss of money or any other belongings during your sleep) your chances of finding that same girl again are actually as low as zero. Take care!

Take A Girl Out Of A Bar

Ok, now you walk along, say, Soi 8 in Central Pattaya on a random evening of the year. "Hello sexy man", "Where you go?" and sometimes an obvious
"I want go with you" is yelled at you from every bar, and Soi 8, in case you don't know it yet, is absolutely packed with open-air bars!
Nice sight, all these young exotic women competing for your attention, isn't it?
Do not worry if your low self-esteem and reason can hardly agree with their rating of your incredibly attractive looks which you had never been aware of before walking along this Soi. You might be old, bold and fat, so what? Even more reason to enjoy their attention: as long as you do not really believe you are as "sexy" as they make you believe you were.
Now when you have read this page and are indeed on Soi 8, chances that you finally stop at a bar and start a chat with one of the bar girls are probably very high. Remember that the English skills of the average Isaan rice farmer's daughter are usually rather low. Therefor the typical bar girl chit-chat always samples the same old questions and phrases they've picked up from their more experienced co-workers:
"Where you from?
What my name you?
How long you stay Pattaya?"
The popular standard question "What hotel you stay?" could be an early hint at a more profound (financial) interest in your company.
Sooner or later she might ask you to buy her a "Lady drink". Bar girls earn commissions on "lady drinks", so given the low base wages there's nothing wrong with buying a girl a lady drink or two. However, you should be careful when a girl pushes you too much or asks you for a new lady drink every 15 minutes, especially if you've replied to her question "How many times you come Pattaya" with a telltale "First time."
If you like the girl you've been chatting with you can ask her to accompany you unless she has made her readiness to be your partner of the night clear enough herself already. However - if this is your first bar of the night, you could as well "check bin" and stroll along, have another drink at another bar and find out whether the beauty next-door isn't actually even more beautiful. Take your time, enjoy yourself, do not fall for the first best girl! Remember, you are not in a hurry here, there are more than a thousand bars in Pattaya and tens of thousands of sexy girls who are nearly all willing to become your special friend of the night!

In order to take a girl out of her bar (usually for a night or until the beginning of her next shift) you will be asked to pay her "bar fine", usually between 200 and 300 Baht at a Beer Bar or around 500 Baht in a GoGo bar.
Remember that you'll still have to pay the girl a kind of "compensation fee" for additional sexual services or the time she's investing in you, even if you shouldn't sleep with her, for example, because you're too drunk. The going rates are roughly as follows at the moment.

Long-time (as well as short-time) rates are always negotiable, especially during the long low season or when staying with the same girl for several days or even weeks. Being negotiable, however, also implies that there is virtually no limit to how much a certain girl could ask for, especially if you fancy an 'easy on the eye' stunner from a well attended GoGo bar! In order
to avoid a bad surprise or even an argument the next morning (or one hour later) I would advise you to agree on a certain price before paying her "bar fine".
Please note that many Pattaya bar girls and especially those employed in AGoGo's have recently developed a "short-time mentality" and might not be really interested in spending the whole night with you (no matter what you've agreed on). The reason for this, of course, is that several "short times" per night are more lucrative than one "long time" session. And in case the bar should be closed already, there are several Discos in the Walking Street area where girls operate as freelance hookers after their "regular working hours".

In Your Hotel Room

At your hotel reception your girl will probably be asked to leave her ID card. Whereas this is for your own safety in case of any problems (loss of money or other belongings) some hotels have the policy to charge you extra for the "unregistered guest" which can mean additional expenses of between 300 to 500 THB per visit to your room. Especially upscale hotels or such that cater to family vacationers might have such a policy, others just want to rip you off. If you consider having female "guests" regularly, you are advised to check in advance (before "checking in") whether your hotel charges you for such visits as this extra payment can certainly become a bit expensive on the long run.
Of course you can just try to refuse to pay, maybe you're lucky? After all, in Thailand you pay for a room, not per person.
In your hotel room you will probably find out that Thai women have a strong sense of cleanliness and usually take a shower before going to bed with you, and of course she will ask you to take a shower as well. Unless your girl has been "in business" for a while and has discarded her natural shyness already you should now also find out that Thai girls aren't only clean but, believe it or not, also shy. Thus the shower is usually to be taken separately. You should not be surprised either if it takes quite some persuasion (or switching off of the lights) to make an unexperienced bar girl strip off her towel following the shower. As a rough rule of thumb - a bar girl is the less shy the longer she's been in the sex business. Of course her experience as a sex worker (as well as your skills of soft persuasion) also determine her willingness to perform sexual practices less common with Thai men (BJ, anal).
Unless you fancy a subsequent HIV-test it should be self-evident to use a condom when having sex with a Pattaya bar girl. Even if the risk of an HIV-
infection might not be as high as frequently reported, sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are unfortunately very common in Pattaya. It need not be Aids or Hepatitis - a genital fungal infection, Herpes or a Gonorrhoea can easily be transmitted and would spoil your holidays for at least a week!

As mentioned above, when picking up freelancers from Pattaya beach road or discotheques notorious as "pick-up joints", it does make sense if the girl leaves her ID card at the hotel reception as in case of any problems (loss of belongings) it would be nearly impossible to find the same girl again.
